Virginia RFC Under 10's shine at Ashbourne Blitz

Match 1: Terrenure RFC 1 Virginia RFC 6

Virginia u10's were on their travels again last Sunday when they journeyed to Ashbourne to play their hosts, and Terenure from Dublin. With the season drawing to a close it was important they put in a couple of good performances in preparation for the blitz in Armagh next weekend. In their first match they played the side from Dublin. The first half was very competetive. Finn Lotscher put Virginia in the lead but Terenure were soon level, and pressing hard to take the lead. Some great tackling and a strong defence from Evan Charters, Sorcha Higgins and John Dolan meant Virginia kept them at bay, and Michael McKeown Boyle crashed over just before half time to give the Cavan team the lead. In the second half Virginia really upped their game fighting harder to gain possession, and with Aaron Mannion running the show at scrum half, they ran out 6-1 winners with two tries apiece from Emmet Boylan and Adam Sheriff.

Match 2 Ashbourne RFC 2 Virginia RFC 5

In the second fixture they faced their hosts who looked a strong physical side, and this proved to be the case. Once again the first half was very close, with Paddy Nagle running in two tries either side of one from Ashbourne. At the end of the first half Virginia were camped on the Ashbourne line. Both Billy Burke and Sean McEvoy had tries disallowed before Enda Maguire crossed the line to give Virginia a 3-1 lead. Early Ashbourne pressure in the second half was well defended By Cai Walker, Rebecca Snell, Jack Ryan and debut boy Louis Reeves, and Virginia were soon back on top. Enda went over for his second of the game, and Patrick Gordon then added try five for the Cavan outfit, before Ashbourne got a a late consolation to make the final score 5-2.

Virginia RFC Under 8's march on.

Virginina - 8 Skerries - 4

Minis Rugby U8s had a Home match against Skerries last Sunday 6th March at the Deerpark Club. Skerries had a great turn out bringing 17 players. The Virginia team were Luke Doyle, Donal Maguire, Conor Nulty, Malachy Walker, Nathan Tobin, Adam Charters, Conor Fitzpatrick, Patrick Sheirdan, James Kelly, Oisin Rourke & Luke Gillick. The Match consisted of four 15 minutes. Virginia played solid from start to finish as usual. Again no words can describe the ability and knowledge that this team have. Their Rucking, Mauling & Tackling should be showcased at the Aviva Stadium for half time entertainment at the Ireland V England Match. A Debut try from Luke Doyle and an outstanding performance from Nathan Tobin whose Rucking, Tackling and Offloading created some of the trys for Virginia. This young player will be on the score sheet with a debut hat trick – Watch this space. In the third quarter of this match Skerries put it up to Virginia with six minutes of non stop Rucking,Mauling & Passing from both sides, the Referee from Virginia was finding it hard to keep up with the play. Supporters from both sides found it hard to contain themselves with excitement. This was definitely The Match of the Season so far. With six weeks still left to go in the season there is still a lot of Good Rugby left in this Team so come out from all the crossroads in Cavan and support them, you wont be disappointed. Score at the end of the match was 8-4 to Virginia. Finally we would like to thank Skerries RFC for travelling & hope to see them for a return visit.

Virginia being the visiting team got first tip. This fell to Harry McQuade. Cavan broke the ice with the first try. Virginia came back with determination with a try from Adam Charters that was created from great passing from Oisin Rourke, Nathan Tobin, Eli Caffrey, and Luke Gillick. The match was all Square going into half time. It was going to take something spectacular from either side to win this one.

Cavan started the stronger in the second half and score a try that should have won the match for them, but with 3 minutes left and the Supporters going NUTS Virginia came back with another try from Adam that Declan Kidney would be proud off. A good Draw with both sides happy and already talking about the Rematch in Virginia not to be Missed.

Match 2: Virginia V Monaghan.

Monaghan is another fine Rugby Team. This was another tough encounter for Virginia. Adam Charters of Virginia scores the first try. This did not unsettle Monaghan because they came back with a try of their own. Monaghan then scored a second try before half time.
