Cavan - 2

Virginia - 4

Virginia RFC U11s travelled for their first away match of the season last Saturday to near neighbours Cavan for a friendly fixture. Virginia started brightly and dominated much of the first half. It was a close affair though and by half time there was only one score in it after Michael McKeown Boyle crashed over for the visitors. Cavan started brightly in the second half and were soon level. Virginia hit back with a try from Finn Lotscher, but Cavan weren't to be beaten. The home side dominated much of the rest of the match and after equalising again went on to score two more to win 4-2. The future looks bright for Virginia RFC Under age

Virginia U10's welcomed Skerries to the Deerpark last Sunday for an invitational fixture. Once again the squad was split in two as numbers continue to grow, ensuring spectators were treated to four good games of rugby.

Match 1 Virginia 5 Skerries 4

The first fixture saw a Virginia team led by Skerries native Billy Burke take the lead after early pressure with a try scored by Finn Lotscher. Skerries replied quickly to equalise, but then Virginia looked to be running away with it, leading 4-1 at half time with two trys from John Dolan and one from Paddy Nagle. Skerries regrouped after the break and with just minutes to go had pulled the score back to 4-4. Virginia then pushed for the win with Finn going over for his 2nd to snatch a 5-4 victory at the death.

Match 2 Virginia 6 Skerries 3

In match 2 Virginia were led by ex Skerries player Cai Walker. Virginia opened up very strongly, and with two trys from Cai, and one apiece from Sean McEvoy and Enda Maguire were 4-0 up at the break, due to some great defending led by Maeve Bett. The second half was match closer with the teams trading tries. Adam Sheriff scored for the hosts, and Cai completed his hatrick, before Skerries completed the scoring with the last move of the game to make the final score 6-3 to Virginia.

Match 3 Virginia 2 Skerries 3

In match 3 the visitors really upped their game. Skerries took an early lead before Billy went over to equalise to tie the match at half time. In the second half Skerries really piled on the pressure, and despite heroic tackling from Evan Charters and Rebecca Snell were leading 3-1 with minutes to go. Virginia then really upped their game, but despite heavy pressure could only snatch a late consolation when Sorcha Higgins went over in the corner, Skerries running out 3-2 winners.

Match 4 Virginia 5 Skerries 0

In the final fixture Virginia again started strongly, and with two trys from Sean and one more from Adam led 3-0 at the break. What was really noticeable in this performance was the ferocious tackling by the hosts on what was a big Skerries side, especially from Patrick Gordon, Jack Ryan and Enda Maguire. This kept the visitors scoreless, and with Enda running in two more trys Virginia ended the day with a 5-0 victory.

Virginia's Under 10's put on a fine show at home

Match 1: Virginia 5 Portadown 2. The U10's were split into two evenly matched squads to face the two visiting teams from Portadown, ensuring the supporters had four great games to watch. The first match was a relatively close affair with Virginia running out 5-2 winners with two trys from Evan Charters, and one a piece from Enda Maguire, Billy Burke, and Finn Lotscher.

Match 2: Virginia 7 Portadown 0. The hosts really opened up. Sean McEvoy and Aaron Mannion both crossed the try line twice, with Adam Sheriff, Michael McKeown-Boyle and Emmet Boylan adding one each to make the final score 7-0.

Match 3: Virginia 4 Portadown 2. This was the closest of the day. Amanda McQuade scored twice to give Virginia a 2-1 half time lead, but the visitors pressed hard. Great tackling and work at the breakdown led by Cai Walker finally allowed the home side to gain the upper hand, with Sean and Emmet adding trys to win the game 4-2.

Match 4: Virginia 7 Portadown 1. In the final game Virginia again opened up with some great passing and quick rucking being the key to their success. Virginia U10's dominate on home ground.

Virginia Under 10's hosted their first blitz of the season last weekend with teams visiting from Ardee, Athboy and North Meath.

Match 1: Virginia 2 v Ardee 1 Their first match was against Ardee and the visitors got off to a strong start, but were held scorless due to some great tackling from Adam Sheriff. Towards the middle of the first half Virginia began to take control with the game being bossed by Emmet Boylan, and by half time they led 2-0 thanks to great trys from Finn Lotscher and Biily Burke. They maintained the pressure during the second half without adding to their score, and thanks to a breakaway try at the end from Ardee, eventually ran out 2-1 winners.

Match 2. Virginia 4 v North Meath 0 Virginia put the pressure on right from the whistle. A real feature of their play this week was the tackle count they put in, barely missing one throughout their three games, and led in this match by Cai Walker and John Dolan. Trys from Evan Charters and Michael Mckeon-Boyle meant they led 2-0 at the break. The pressure was renewed in the second half and the tone set by Sorcha Higgins with a powerful run up the line. Michael then added two more trys to complete his hatrick, the match ending 4-0 to Virginia.

Match 3. Virginia 3 v Athboy 1;Their final match was against Athboy, and another strong start with trys from Sean McEvoy and Enda Maguire meant they led 2-0 at half-time. The strong defence continued, this time led by Maeve Bett and Paddy Nagle. In the second half another breakaway from Athboy meant they pulled it back to 2-1, but when Enda went over for his second of the match the victory was secured, the hosts running out 3-1 winners.

The U10's are at home again next Saturday morning when they host Portadown.

Gallant performance by Virginia u10 just not enough.

Virginia RFC Under 10's travelled to Dundalk for their first fixture of 2011 on Sunday last. Unbeaten so far this season their confidence was high but they came up against a very strong and skilful home side. Early pressure paid off for Dundalk when they took a deserved lead, but a strong finish to the half saw captain for the day Adam Sheriff cross for an equalising try. The visitors came under heavy pressure early in the second half, and despite some great tackling led by Enda Maguire found themselves very quickly 3-1 down. Virginia then rallied and put Dundalk under constant pressure for last 10 minutes of the match. A searing run by Patrick Nagle ended with a foot just in touch, both Sorcha Higgins and Aaron Mannion were held up over the line, and Adam was robbed of the ball just before touching down for his second. The pressure eventually paid off when Emmet Boylan halved the deficit, but Virginia ran out of time and went down to a narrow 3-2 defeat. They travel to Ratoath this weekend hoping to get back to winning ways". Dundalk 3 Virginia 2

Virginia U10's win in Kells

The Under 10's travelled to Kells for the latest North Leinster blitz hosted by North Meath RFC. They opened the day with a convincing win over Ardee, eventually winning 5-0 with two trys apiece from Evan Charters and Enda Maguire, and one from Amanda McQuade.

Next up they faced a much tougher task against Boyne from Drogheda. Boyne were the only team so far this season to hold Virgina to a draw, and once again this proved to be a close match. A try from Sean McEvoy, and some tough tackling from Sorcha Higgins and Patrick Gordon, meant that Virginia were 1-0 up at the break. The Ramor boys started the second half well with good work from Cai Walker setting up trys for Micheal McKeown-Boyle and another one for Evan. Boyne then hit back strongly scoring two quick trys, but some stern defence led by Billy Burke and John Dolan saw them hang on for a 3-2 win.

The third match was against an understrength Athboy team and Virginia ran out comfortable 9-1 winners with two trys from Adam Sherriff, one from Aaron Mannion, and a further two each from Sean, Micheal and Enda. Their final match was against hosts North Meath, and once again a strong performance gave them a 6-1 victory with Micheal and Enda again bagging a brace, and one apiece from Amanda and Adam. The team now have a well earned break from blitzs for the next two weekends, but training will take place on Sunday Mornings 10.30am at the Deerpark.

The Steam Train that is Virginia U10’s rugby ploughs on.....!!!

After several trips into north Leinster Virginia under 10's returned to the province on Saturday for matches against Cavan and Monaghan.

Match1: Cavan V Virginia

The first match was against their hosts Cavan and a strong first half performance saw them lead 3-0 with trys from Emmet Boylan, Cai Walker and Billy Burke. Virginia ran out eventual 4-1 winners after Evan Charters added another try after the break.

Match 2: Monaghan V Virginia

Monaghan proved very tough opposition in the second match. Virginia started the match well leading 3-1 through trys from Enda Maguire, Amanda McQuade and John Dolan, but by half time Monaghan had pulled the scores level at 3-3. However some great tackling and their best performance of the season at the breakdown meant Virginia ran out eventual 5-3 winners with another try apiece from Enda and Amanda.

Finally a very special thanks to Cavan for hosting the Blitz, for the Generous Refreshments after the Games and Virginia is looking forward already for the return Blitz. Date to be Confirmed. Watch this Space!

Under 10's keep their 100%

record intact.

The Under 10's had a bruising day in Drogheda but left the Boyne RFC blitz with their unbeaten record for the season intact.

Match 1: Navan v Virginia,

After a close first half the Virginia U10’s really opened up, running out comfortable 4-0 winners with two trys from Adam Sheriff and one apiece for Evan Charters and Cai Walker. The win was down to some great offloading and quick ball from the maul, especially from John Dolan and Sorcha Higgins.

Match 2 Boyne v Virginia

Where hosts Boyne were formidable oppositions in what was the first of three tough encounters. The tackle count was high and despite desperate defence led by Amanda McQuade, Billy Burke and Emmet Boylan the team were 1-0 down at half time. A strong second half performance was capped by a searing run from Patrick Nagle who put Cai over in the corner for a late equaliser, the match finishing 1-1.

Match 3

Again saw Virginia 1-0 down at the turn, and our defence had to impress under pressure from their opponents. Great work from Sean McEvoy and Aaron Mannion allowed Cai to grab another try off the bench and Finn Lotscher to run over for the winner.

Match 4: Ratoath v Virginia

This was against a very physical Ratoath side, and despite continuing their great defensive work Virginia again trailed by one at the break. A determined effort however saw Finn grab another try to equalise and Adam run over to snatch victory with the last move of the game, to leave the final score 2-1 to Virginia.

Another though weekend of rugby for the mighty U11's of Virginia RFC

Virginia Minis U11s travelled this Sunday 7th November to Ashbourne for their second Leinster Blitz this season.

Match 1 Virginia V Ashbourne.

Virginia got off to a flying start with great support play by Lisa Mullen, Seanie Keogan, and Anthony Moore to allow Peter Smith score the first try. Great tackling by Gareth Mannion, Sean Warren, Paul Donoghue, and Owen Doyle who prevented Ashbourne going over for a try. Quick moving ball out of the ruck sent Peter Smith sprinting down the middle of the pitch like a panther to score his second try. Coach Aidan McWeeney was sweating balls because he promised the first person to score a hat trick 20 Euros. Score at the end of this game 2-0 to Virginia.

Match 2 Virginia V Boyne.

This was a match of two halves. Virginia got cocky after their first win. Boyne came at them with all guns blazing with excellent tackling and passing resulting in a try that you would’nt see in Aviva Stadium. At half time a gruelling team talk by Coaches Pat Mullen and Aidan McWeeney sent them on a path of recovery. Virginia scores an equalizer from the quick hands of scrum half Lisa Mullen releasing the ball to Ben Smith who then passed it to Seanie Keogan who got a try. This half proved to be very tough for Virginia but they came out on top by showing their skill and determination with great tackling and passing by Aaron Dowd, Eoin McCaul, Euan Henry, Sean Warren and Peter Smith resulting in Seanie getting his second try. A lot had to be said about the referee who we won’t mention AMc from side line supporters, but he took it all in his stride and there was no need for him to be escorted from the pitch.

Match 3 Virginia V Dundalk.

This is one of Virginia’s arch rivals. This match was down to physical endurance and the best team won. Virginia got off to a good start with two early try’s from Peter Smith. They let Dundalk back into the match before half time with a score. Two tired sides came out for the second half, Dundalk proved to be the more physical and hungrier side and went on to win the match with two terrific trys. A Hard Lesson for Virginia to learn. Finally we would like to thank Ashbourne for hosting the blitz and the refreshment afterwards.
